AFP is Rising... bad news!

We received a major blow today. Ashley's AFP test was #24. When we began chemo round III it was 7.3, when we began what we thought was our last chemo her AFP was 13.9 and today just one week after Chemo IV her reading is 24.

This means her cancer is back or it probably never left and she's also become chemo resistent. The doctors haven't told us its back, but I'm just fearing the worst. The doctors said they just don't know yet and we have to wait and see. We'll schedule another CT scan as soon as her ANC levels are back to normal.

I can't begin to tell you what we're thinking. Its not good. I don't know what to do. We don't know if we should tell Whitney. We don't know if Whitney should stay with grandma for a few days while we sort through this in our heads. We don't know what to do.

Tony took Whitney and Ashley for a drive to get Ashley to fall asleep. I feel like a deflated balloon. My chest feels empty like I'm trying to catch my breath but I'm not breathing heavy like one would after running a race. My body feels limp. - April

April... I know it's probably hard to think about anything, but please let us know what we can do. Anything at all to help... And don't give up - there's always hope that things can turn around. Remember what you said in your last post about those numbers jumping around. Stay strong...

Oh April, I'm sorry. I don't know what to say. What are her doctors saying? Let us know if there is anything we can do.

Oh April and Tony! I wish there was a magic wand I could wave over Ashley and make it all just go away. I can only pray for her that these numbers are a temporary blip in her treatment. All my love, Susan

Has your doctor said anything about whether this is caused by liver regeneration? This was one reason my daughter's numbers rose when they were supposed to be going down. I hope there is a positive explanation for the increase. Hang in there . . .

Tony, April. Whitney and Ashley a friend of my is going into her 3rd brain surgery for cancery this afternoon. I just spoke with her before reading your blog. She mentioned a book that she just finished that has given her unbelievable strength to face her battle against cancer, and thought you might also find it helpful. The author is Terry McBride and the name of the book is The Hell I Can't.
The last thing Jenn said to me before we hung up - was to remember the power of positive thoughts. Funny that she was telling me these things. Your love, tender hugs and smiles are all messages of positive emotion, and the mind can do amazing things, especially for one so young who does not have ingrained negative practices.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. All our love,
Derek, Isabel Max and Kate
